Why does derek branning

EastEnders writers have a history of killing off major characters over Christmas. Last year, viewers saw doctor Yusef Khan perish in a fire and watched soap favourite Pat Evans die from cancer. A spokesman for the soap refused to acknowledge the pattern and simply said: "We don't want to comment and spoil it for the viewers.

But it seems when the truth did finally out, the watered-down histrionics of an archetypal Walford Christmas disappointed, as the EastEnders baddie died of natural causes. Believing Derek would die at the hands of one of his brothers, Max and Jack, or Alfie Moon — whose wife Kat Derek has been having an affair with — viewers began the conjecture early on in the episode.

The festive episode kicked off with Alfie trying to enjoy Christmas with the Moons and Mitchell clans, while Kat spent the day with the Brannings. Unaware that Derek was genuinely in danger, Max, Jack and Joey Branning watched hin fall to the ground with Kat, but the group then ran towards him and discovered he was dead. Derek was old school, proper East End. After years behind bars he looked for a place to make his mark. And his old manor, Walford, was as good as any.

Derek was the eldest of the Branning brothers. When he was young he had his own gang, who terrorised anyone who crossed their path. Derek's real wish was to reinstate himself as head of the Branning clan, something he'd missed for the last 30 years. He would take out anyone who stood in his way. And believe us, his bark was nothing compared to his bite. It might be hard to imagine Derek in a relationship, but he was a charmer that had an unlikely way with the ladies.

When daughter Alice returned to his life, we hoped that we might have seen a new, softer side to Derek… but apart from a heroic rescue of son Joey and niece Lauren from a burning building, it was been business as usual for dastardly Derek. However he is unknowingly scammed by Alfie and Billy, and suspects Phil of conning him.

Derek realises that Roxy has fallen in love with Alfie, so deliberately sends Alfie off on a job and makes it look to Roxy that he killed Alfie. When Alfie returns safe, Roxy tries to punch Derek for the humiliation he caused her but is restrained by Alfie. She introduces herself as Kirsty Branning, Max's wife, whom he married while staying with Derek in It is revealed that Derek never handed Kirsty Max's divorce papers or the money that Max was giving to her, but allowed Max to think they were divorced, and did not tell Max about Kirsty's pregnancy, instead telling Kirsty that Max wanted the child aborted, which she did.

A massive argument ensues and Derek shouts at Max and Jack, saying he has never liked Max and he was the person who locked him in a coffin as a child Max had believed it was Jim. Derek is forced out of the house by Max, Jack and Joey, while Kat watches on. He then suffers a fatal heart attack on the street and dies. Villains Wiki. Villains Wiki Explore.
