How long tropical fish survive without food

There is even a case published on the British news website The Telegraph where a goldfish survived for an impressive days after an earthquake in New Zealand. The poor fish fed on algae and other tank inhabitants that had passed away. While this is a sad and extreme example, it shows the strength of goldfish. Here are some of your options. This is because, as you probably know, goldfish look hungry all the time. The chances that your friend or neighbour will overfeed and pollute your aquarium are high, and this could kill your fish.

If you leave longer than two weeks, you probably have to ask another person to check on your tank. If you can afford professional fish-sitters, which exist, try getting a hold of them. If you opt for a friend or neighbour, give them proper instructions and potentially even prepare all the servings they have to give their fish. Providing them with a feeding schedule is also important. There are many options available that you can program just the way you would want. But I would be very careful to say the least.

It got me into so much trouble! You see, we are great at feeding our own fish. In my case, the feeder machine was feeding too much and I got home to a heavily polluted aquarium with lots of algae. Thank goodness all my fish were still alive.

I recommend buying the affordable Eheim feeder, which offers you great versatility when it comes to programming its schedule. It can even feed more times in one day, which is great for goldfish. These weekend feeders or vacation feeders are designed to slowly give off food over a prolonged period of time.

There are different types of fish that fall into four distinguished categories based on their diet. The four main categories are herbivore, omnivore, carnivore, and limnivore. While carnivores, such as cichlids, eat meat, herbivores, such as tangs, only consume plants and algae. Omnivores tend to consume both meat and plants. Limnivores consume mud-based food. In short, the feeding frequency of the fish depends on the type of fish you have.

Generally, carnivores tend to survive longer without feeding as compared to other fish types. The other categories of fish demand food more frequently in order to survive—especially Limnivores and Herbivores— they spend more time eating or looking for food.

Is your aquarium well-established, old or relatively new? Apart from a few reservations, the more well-established and older a fish tank is, the longer it will survive without incurring any disastrous event.

The main reason behind this is that the inhabitants of that aquarium are already aware of how they can survive in it. The fish have also been healthy for long and all members of the fish community are getting along well with each other. So, if the aquarium is established well, then it can run smoothly for longer time periods on auto-pilot. There may also be behavioral overstocking in the aquarium, such as territoriality or the production of waste.

You should be well-informed about the set-up of your aquarium as it will become easier for you to foresee how long your fish can stay without food. Many people tend to leave their aquariums without any food for around 2 to 3 days.

So, we can easily establish that your fish can survive a weekend holiday without feeding. However, to make sure that your fish remain healthy while you are away on the weekend, you should clean the filtration system and change the water a few days before leaving.

This will ensure that the fish survive the weekend without food and remain healthy. I personally dont feed my fish on monday and thursday every week and can report nothing but success. Thanks for all the replies. Certainly one less thing to worry about, although i'll certainly check out the blocks.

Quite a few members her have a "fast" day for their fish each week when they don't feed them.

I have left mine unfed over a week's vacation on numerous occasions. There was even a very old thread on here from a teacher who returned to school after the summer holidays to find that the person that should have taken the fish in the school aquarium home for the summer didn't and they had gone the entire summer without being fed.

They were apparently thin and the tank was a mess from no water changes but the fish all survived. OldMan47 Livebearer fanatic Retired Moderator. I have left my fish for 2 weeks at a time and not had much problem but that does not mean that it is a good idea to do it as a normal practice. I am forever seeing people say that fish don't get fed every day in the wild.

That is perhaps a half truth at best. Many of our fish eat either plant material like algae or bugs. Although bugs can be hard to find near the water at some times of year in a temperate climate, they are never rare near water in a tropical setting. The same goes for algae. Algae may not coat every surface in a creek but is never really missing in a natural setting. Another common food source is decaying plant matter which can always be found to some degree in even the most fertile of growing areas.

All of this adds up to an easy statement. Fish don't skip days at all in the wild, I doubt they skip very many hours really. Fish, other than obligate predators, graze almost constantly, even though they can survive long periods without food. Healthy people can go a week or two without food too, but is it really a good practice? You must log in or register to reply here.
