But he soon ran out of flesh and, in his search for new customers and experience, joined one of the traveling circuses. In , he worked on his first sideshow in Greenville, South Carolina, where he vividly recalls striking up a friendship with the three-legged man.

He said that, when the streetcar was crowded, he would use that extra leg for a seat. He could sit on it like a stool. Rae Happyland Show where he met his wife, Helen. She was working as a snake charmer.

Rogers explained that during that period many tattooists made their living working with the traveling shows. This was during the great depression and times were extremely hard. Throughout the s, to make ends meet and to help support his wife and two children, Rogers would spend his winters working in the Cotton Mills and the summers tattooing with the circus.

Rogers recalled that, initially, the circus owners wanted the tattooists to double as the tattooed man and be on display, but later Paul was able to work purely as a tattooist. As well as working out of a mobile tattoo studio, Rogers also worked in an assortment of poolrooms as well as army boot camps.

They had it all covered. In , Rogers got a chance to get off the road and set up his own shop in Charleston, South Carolina. A friend and fellow mill worker F. A Myers, who had taken up tattooing, invited Rogers to go into a partnership. At last he was able to forever turn his back on the exploitation and slave wages of the mills.

Buchanan, tattooed wonder of the crew, surrounded by shipmates, Later Rogers wrote to Coleman and then visited his shop in Norfolk, Virginia. Coleman then offered him a job in his shop, once the war was over.

Who would turn that down, given all the fantastic things one could learn? In , Rogers began a five-year association with Coleman. Norfolk was a navy town, so there was no shortage of customers. Rogers recalls Coleman with mixed feelings. He was in no doubt that Coleman was one of the greatest tattooist in the world, but he was certainly not in awe of his personality.

Coleman was a people hater. He was sort of a hermit and practically lived in the shop. And he would have a can of tinned spinach for breakfast! He told them it would make them sick. His work was clear and well shaded. Consequently, his tattoo designs epitomized what came to be known as the classic American-style tattooing that dominated the s to the s.

Hey man— ten bucks is ten bucks. Prior to working with Coleman, Rogers had to learn everything the hard way, through trial and error. While working for Coleman, Rogers began fixing the machines for all the tattooers working in Norfolk.

The city of Norfolk decided to ban tattooing. This forced most of the Norfolk tattooists across the Elizabeth River to Portsmouth.

Rogers eventually formed a partnership with R. Connelly, a talented tattooist who worked briefly with Coleman. While working in the Jacksonville shop, Rogers met Huck Spaulding. Are you one of them?

For Paralympian Josef Craig and everyone else that wears the proudest tattoo there is — stand up on the blocks and wear it proud. Reprinted from Caps and Goggles , by Casey Barrett. All commentaries are the opinion of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Swimming World Magazine nor its staff. Casey hits the nail on the head here repeatedly.

Shawn Kornoelje had a very insightful commentary about this on my profile page… Very enlightening. Victor Davis won the silver, but did win gold in the m breaststroke.

Emily Seebohm Blair Evans.. What the hell getting disqualified because of your Olympic Rings tatoo what is the world coming to??? Yes , I agree , what IS the world coming to?? Who makes such rediculous rules? Someone who has never even swam in competition. So the Paralympic organization may be involved but the IOC and the Paralympic organization are not the same.

Not true at all! They are an arm of the IOC and follow the same regulations! Sorry I am a wheelchair racer and know all about this. Plea do your research. Olympic rings tattoo: These London medal winners would need to be disqualified too! How crazy. A disgraceful decision. This guy is an Olympic champ, surely he deserves and has earned the right. It says a lot when you can come to the start line doped and get away with it, but heaven help the athlete with a branding violation.

I did an ironman last year and yes i got the tattoo on my calf like so many do. Poor example…. Olympics and Paralympics are two completely different organizations with different logos.

Your example would make sense if you had a Spartan Race tattoo while competing in an ironman event. Please do your research! The key here is he is a paralympian swimming at an IPC event.

Its like having a nike tattoo at an adidas event. They wouldnt allow it. He was asked to cover it and as soon as he did he was allowed to race. It is all logos unless they authorized by the IOC and it has to be the exact size and placement and the list is so long it is sickening!

IOC will issue permission letters if asked. Whatever you think of the corporate branding issue, this fact still stands. The Paralympics has a completely separate logo, so much so that all Olympics rings logos were removed from the venues before the London Paralympics I was a spectator for both.

In my opinion he does not have the right to wear that tattoo. As I said, that is just my opinion. Maybe I got carried away. I look forward to hearing them. Oh wow, as a former Paralympian it actually breaks my heart to see someone comment these kinds of things. Like you know anything about achievements. They work their asses off just like any able bodied athlete. They would never EVER say anything to cut someone down like that.

So on behalf of my strong, loving, beautiful teammates I ask that you spend some time getting to know these people before sending hurtful messages like this to the world.

This is one of many issues with IPC. There is a rule that they can only wear a cap with a small logo on one side of the cap. The team literally had to purchase new plain white caps to wear for the event. Some of these little rules cause such a stink….. Sooooooo as a tattooed Olympian who raced at two games I nearly threw up in my mouth. His body with a substance that would help him move more easily through the water.

And as if there are not more athletes at European champs that are not glaring at the official every day now. He should walk off the deck. This is ridiculous. Especially as zoggs, speedo and more have their little marks on gear. Are athletes going to have to compete nude now? And what about country flags and colours? Is this not advertising where each athlete is from and the sporting prowess of each nation?

I mean really.
